Masterson, Dodgers Shut Down I-Cubs, 8-0 Oklahoma City wins its sixth straight home game in Bricktown

Justin Masterson pitched seven shutout innings and the Oklahoma City Dodgers racked up their highest run total in five games in an 8-0 win against the Iowa Cubs Wednesday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

The Dodgers collected their sixth straight home win and a third straight win overall as they took a 2-0 lead in their series against Iowa in front of a crowd of 4,698.

Masterson (7-4) held Iowa scoreless and to two hits over seven innings, issued two walks and recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts for the Dodgers in his team-leading seventh win of the season.

Justin Marks pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit, to complete the Dodgers’ fifth shutout win of the season and first since a 4-0 victory against Colorado Springs June 3 in six innings.

The Dodgers (48-36) quickly grabbed the game’s first lead in the first inning.

With two outs in the opening frame, O’Koyea Dickson homered to the deepest part of the ballpark in left-center field to put the Dodgers ahead, 1-0. The homer was Dickson’s 18th of the season and moved him into a tie for the team lead with Willie Calhoun.

Max Muncy led off the bottom of the second inning with a towering home run to right field beyond the Iowa bullpen to put the Dodgers ahead, 2-0. The home runs pushed Oklahoma City’s season total to 103 as the team recorded its 31st multi-homer game of the season.

Later in the inning with two outs, Masterson singled to center field and Alex Verdugo doubled to deep center field. Then with runners at second and third base, Iowa pitcher Seth Frankoff threw a wild pitch that got past catcher Ali Solis and allowed Masterson to score for a 3-0 Oklahoma City advantage.

Muncy led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a double to left field, then scored on a RBI double by Bobby Wilson down the left-field line for a 4-0 Dodgers lead.

Dickson drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning. Calhoun followed with a ground-rule double to right-center field. Scott Van Slyke came up to bat next and connected on a two-run single up the middle to extend the Dodgers to a 6-0 lead. Wilson’s RBI double pushed OKC to a 7-0 advantage before Mike Freeman’s RBI single gave OKC an 8-0 advantage.

After Masterson retired 10 Iowa batters in a row and held Iowa (39-47) to one hit through five innings, Kyle Schwarber doubled with two outs in the sixth inning for Iowa’s second hit of the night.

Frankoff (1-5) was charged with the loss for Iowa, allowing eight runs and 10 hits over 4.1 innings with two walks and three strikeouts.
