Local civic leader to discuss how to create a beloved community
Dr. Ashanti-Alexander will speak about coming together in divided times

CHICKASHA, Okla. (March 23, 2017) – Hosted by the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, Dr. Raushan Ashanti-Alexander—principal of Lincoln Elementary School, Chickasha city councilman for Ward 3 and president of the tri-county chapter of the NAACP—will present a lecture entitled “Creating a Beloved Community.” The discussion will be held March 30 at 7 p.m. in the USAO Ballroom and is free and open to the public.

Ashanti-Alexander will talk about ways to create a strongly interconnected community through mutual respect and understanding in the midst of corporate power-grabs, polarized politics and greed. Using his decades of experience in the Oklahoma public school system as a basis, he will emphasize the importance of education in forging the bonds that build a beloved community. After the lecture, Ashanti-Alexander will lead the audience in an open-ended forum.

“Dr. Ashanti-Alexander’s experience in public education is unmatched, and his dedication to serving his community is truly an inspiration to all of us,” said Tonnia Anderson, assistant professor of history and American studies at USAO. “We are incredibly fortunate to have someone with his unique perspective and vast knowledge in our area. His presentation is guaranteed to be an exceptionally timely, thought-provoking event in which we hope our whole community will take an interest.”

Ashanti-Alexander has been an educator or educational administrator for more than 40 years. He was named the principal of Lincoln Elementary School in Chickasha in 2016. A native Oklahoman, Ashanti-Alexander earned his doctorate in education from the University of Oklahoma in 1995. In addition to his career as an educator, he is an ordained minister in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church for over four decades.
